LGBT North Dakotans look ahead after discrimination law fails

LGBT North Dakotans look ahead after discrimination law fails | PinkieB.com | LGBTQ+ Life | Scoop.it

Reachel Benson sits in a chair in the living room, wearing a bright pink T-shirt and long hair draped across her shoulders. She tells the story of growing up. Animated at times, her voice becomes louder, more forceful — her hands in motion as she recalls trying to figure out who she was.

Matt Skallerud's insight:

Benson is disappointed once again at the failure of North Dakota House Bill 1386, legislation that would have specifically banned discrimination against LGBT individuals in the state on matters from employment to service at a restaurant, with certain hiring and admission exceptions included for religious groups. The bill failed 22-69 in the North Dakota House on Feb. 10.

How a Slain Street Vendor Became a Brazilian Hero for LGBTQ and Homeless Communities | PinkieB.com | LGBTQ+ Life | Scoop.it

The death of a street vendor would normally go unnoticed in Brazil. But Luiz Carlos Ruas was exceptional, both in the way he lived and died.

Matt Skallerud's insight:

Ruas, 54, was violently beaten to death on Christmas Day while trying to defend a black transgender woman and a gay homeless man from attack in a metro station. Security footage of the incident has been widely circulated on Brazilian media, searing the awful images into everyone’s memories.

Trump Victory Alarms Gay and Transgender Groups

Trump Victory Alarms Gay and Transgender Groups | PinkieB.com | LGBTQ+ Life | Scoop.it

The election of Donald J. Trump to the presidency sent panic through much of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community, which for the first time in eight years will face an administration hostile to its civil-rights goals and a president-elect who has expressed a desire to reverse many of its political gains.

Commentary: The East-West divide over LGBT rights

Commentary: The East-West divide over LGBT rights | PinkieB.com | LGBTQ+ Life | Scoop.it

In that part of our world called “western” – more a political than a geographical expression – discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) communities is declining. Liberal democratic states are recognizing the right of same-sex couples to marry and are liberating sexual relationships from standard assumptions about reproductive bliss.

Matt Skallerud's insight:

The battle, though, is still joined. There may be more acceptance than rejection in the third millennium, but women and ethnic minorities won their battles against discrimination faster than the LGBT community has – in large part because of the venomous mockery and even violence directed at same-sex relationships.

Youth Activist Daryl Yang: Politics Not The Only Answer To Singapore LGBT Progress

Youth Activist Daryl Yang: Politics Not The Only Answer To Singapore LGBT Progress | PinkieB.com | LGBTQ+ Life | Scoop.it
The power of the youth to volunteer and stand together will push LGBT progress forward, Daryl says.
Matt Skallerud's insight:

Youth activist Daryl Yang, 23, has been holding the fort at the helm of youth activism especially in the Singapore LGBT community this past year, as outgoing coordinator of The G Spot, a student group from Yale-NUS College concerned with issues surrounding gender and sexuality. As he passes on the baton to new coordinators Paul Jerusalem and Guadalupe Lazaro, Daryl said to Popspoken that he learnt that while being in The G Spot, the power of organising people for collective action is a major tool that can move LGBTQ equality forward in Singapore beyond the repealing of the anti-gay Section 377A law.

International LGBT Leaders Conference has Record Attendance

International LGBT Leaders Conference has Record Attendance | PinkieB.com | LGBTQ+ Life | Scoop.it

The Victory Fund Institute 2016 International LGBT Leaders Conference planners were the first to admit this year’s conference was not what they had anticipated it would be.

Matt Skallerud's insight:

They planned around their Presidential Appointments Institute which was primed to push the Clinton administration, through their transition team, to hire record numbers of LGBT personnel. They were set to fight for the first ‘open’ LGBT member of the Cabinet and an openly lesbian or transgender ambassador. As the saying goes “the best laid plans of mice and men” do go astray.

Gay and Lesbian Victory Fund internet videos to support LGBT state candidates; pushes gun issues

Gay and Lesbian Victory Fund internet videos to support LGBT state candidates; pushes gun issues | PinkieB.com | LGBTQ+ Life | Scoop.it

The national Gay and Lesbian Victory Fund is going up with digital video commercials in Florida to support several gay candidates for Florida House seats and attack their Republican opponents for voting with the gun lobby.

Matt Skallerud's insight:

The 30-second commercials begin by pegging onto the June 12 mass murder at Orlando’s popular gay nightclub Pulse, saying “it happened right here” in Orlando or in Florida, depending on the spot. In that massacre, gay-hating, ISIS-pledging madman Omar Mateen shot and killed 49 people and wounded 53 others before he was killed by law enforcement storming the nightclub.

LGBT Group's Ad Asks How Anyone Can Support Trump | PinkieB.com | LGBTQ+ Life | Scoop.it
The nation's largest gay rights group combines its campaign for stricter gun laws with its effort to elect Hillary Clinton.
Matt Skallerud's insight:

The digital ads, produced by the Human Rights Campaign and featuring a mother who lost her son in the June massacre at a gay dance club in Orlando, are part of the ongoing campaign to elect Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton to the White House. The group has invested heavily to mobilize at least 10 million LGBT voters, and its digital efforts are targeting specific voters.
