Queer Gaming Convention GaymerX Debuts in Australia with Kickstarter Campaign

Special guests include Chris Avellone, Tim Cain, Rae Johnston and AussieGamerChick

The Kickstarter campaign for GX Australia, Australia’s first queer geek and gaming convention has gone live. This marks the first time the highly successful US convention GaymerX has debuted outside of the United States. Run by Liam Esler (Event Manager of Game Connect Asia Pacific, Australia’s premiere game development conference) and Joshua Meadows (organiser of Sydney Gaymers, Australia's largest queer gaming group) in conjunction with GaymerX organisers MidBoss, GX Australia will be arriving in Sydney, February 27-28, 2016 at the Australian Technology Park.

In order to make the convention a reality, GX Australia is asking for $50,000 which — along with sponsor funding and ticket sales — will be used to fund over 6,000 square metres of expo space showcasing cosplay tournaments, vendor stalls, tons of indie games talent, and appearances by well-known personalities in the video games industry. Additionally, for the first time at any GX event, the convention will be offered to anyone fifteen and up, or younger if accompanied by a parent or guardian.

“We’re incredibly excited to be working with MidBoss in the United States to bring GaymerX to Australia,” said GX Australia co-director Joshua Meadows. “Both Liam and myself are incredibly passionate about making GX Australia a space for everyone regardless of identity, and we hope to create one of Australia’s best events for gamers and geeks of all stripes!”

Special guests (“Bosses of Honour”) already announced include games industry veterans Chris Avellone (Planescape: Torment and Fallout 2) and Tim Cain (Fallout, Pillars of Eternity), as well as Rae Johnston (Australian cosplayer and technology, video game, and social media expert) and AussieGamerChick (well-known Australian YouTuber), with more announcements promised as the campaign continues.

Strongly supported by Australia’s independent games industry, with sponsors such as Many Monkeys, Defiant Development, League of Geeks, Well Placed Cactus, Screwtape Studios and many more, as well as Media Partner IGEA (the Interactive Games and Entertainment Association), GX Australia seeks to create an inclusive, safe space for everyone with a passion for gaming and geek culture. Its mission is to celebrate the diversity already present in the community while encouraging developers and publishers to continue improving on issues of representation, community safety, and anti-bullying initiatives.
