In the summer of 1978, Gilbert Baker created a rainbow flag as a decoration for San Francisco's Gay Freedom Day Parade. Now, 40 years later, the late artist and activist's flag has become a global symbol for the gay community - a unifying force far beyond the city. In June 2018, San Francisco is awash in the six colors of the flag's rainbow. In the Castro district and downtown along Market Street, there's a riot of rainbow merchandise in store windows ahead of Sunday's annual parade: T-shirts, feather wings, clip-on tails, tutus and even rainbow-striped rompers.
