Homophobia. What a difficult word. Pedants never miss an opportunity to point out that homo is the Greek for “the same”, so it means fear of the same, not fear of homosexuals. Yawn. Personally I’m OK with using the word to mean dislike of gay people, but that doesn’t justify public-sector witchfinders labelling an eight-year-old boy “homophobic” because he tells a friend that his shoes are gay. Also, God help anyone who uses the term homophobia in the wrong context. “You mean TRANSPHOBIA!!!” screams Twitter. And is there a more pathetic sight than Tory MPs and Catholic bishops falling over themselves to say “LGBT” because they’ve been taught that it’s more PC than “gay”?

The Pride Initiative’s efforts have recently paid off. Last month, the Human Rights Campaign Foundation named the Contra Costa Regional Medical Center in Martinez (part of CCHS) as a “Leader in LGBT Healthcare Equality” in its annual Healthcare Equality Index.
