'Orange is the New Black's Laverne Cox Is Still a Badass With Her Newest Words on Trans Stigma

'Orange is the New Black's Laverne Cox Is Still a Badass With Her Newest Words on Trans Stigma | PinkieB.com | LGBTQ+ Life | Scoop.it

The press following Orange Is the New Black's first season has been a third-wave feminist hotbed of discussion about the representation of the LGBT community and people of color. At the center of that discussion has stood Laverne Cox, the beautiful trans actress who portrays a trans character of color on the show. Cox has been speaking quite a bit about trans issues of late, and she recently joined fellow trans activist Janet Mock in a HuffPo Live chat. They discussed a number of things but focused on one issue overall: Namely, the ways in which being attracted to trans women is still being portrayed in ugly and destructive ways.

Do We Still Need Gay Literature?

Do We Still Need Gay Literature? | PinkieB.com | LGBTQ+ Life | Scoop.it

This year has seen major literary debuts from Choire Sicha and Caleb Crain featuring modish gay protagonists, an all-gay YA novel from David Levithan, a new collection of essays by David Sedaris, and a first-time Lambda Literary Award for transgender literature. All of this has been set against the backdrop of the Supreme Court’s landmark decision on DOMA and the legalization of gay marriage in three states. So why is the biggest LGBT literary event of 2013 the publication of David Margolick’s biography of John Horne Burns? The gay author of a long-forgotten World War II novel who was infamous for his demonic personality, and who drank himself to death in Italy at the age of 36. Why, in a year of historic gay successes, are we still so fascinated by the failures of a singularly monstrous homosexual?

Feature length biopic of Tom of Finland’s life coming soon
Given the engorged state of my Internet browser’s porn folders, it’s hard to imagine a time when sexy gay videos and images where hard to come by. But back in the 1950s and ‘60s, many of our horny brethren resorted to perusing fitness magazines in order to view the male body au-naturel, or as close as it could get without being censored.

In Search of a Gay Aesthetic - New York Times

In Search of a Gay Aesthetic - New York Times | PinkieB.com | LGBTQ+ Life | Scoop.it

“I once asked Vivienne Westwood what women have contributed to fashion,” said Valerie Steele, the director of the Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology. “And she answered, ‘Probably not as much as gay men.’ ” Whether or not this assertion stands up to scrutiny, “A Queer History of Fashion: From the Closet to the Catwalk” — a pioneering show curated by Ms. Steele and her colleague, Fred Dennis — makes a cogent case for a more balanced view of fashion history, one that, given the widely held perception that gay men dominate fashion, has curiously tended to skew heterosexual and male.

In Quinn's Loss, Questions About Role of Gender and Sexuality - New York Times

In Quinn's Loss, Questions About Role of Gender and Sexuality - New York Times | PinkieB.com | LGBTQ+ Life | Scoop.it

Ms. Quinn’s resistance to the conversation says a lot about her: She can be unbending, and determined, and she wanted her campaign to be focused on her competence and accomplishments, not her gender. But her fall from front-runner status to a distant third place finish in the Democratic primary is now stirring intense debate about whether her femaleness, or her homosexuality, played any role in her struggle to win over voters.
